Rotary Club of Kirksville - Thousand Hills
February 14, 2019
Program: Olivia Gooch and Marina Fanning;
Rotaract
Olivia (president) and Marina (public relations chair) are members of Rotaract at Truman State University. Rotaract is essentially, the college version of Rotary.  They are heavily involved in many activities at Truman, but in Rotaract they perform a minimum of two hours of service each month of the year.  Truman's Rotaract Club's main philanthropic effort focuses on Make-A-Wish Foundation.  Make-A-Wish Foundation is an organization which allows children battling critical illnesses to build the hope and strength they need to fight harder and see the impossible become possible. Critically ill children submit wishes to the organization concerning things they want to do, places they want to see and the Foundation makes their wish come true. The organization is extremely important to the Club, and especially to Olivia and Marina for a number of reasons, but not the least is that their college roommate was once a recipient of the Make-A-Wish Foundation's hard work. Rotaract is hosting a spaghetti dinner and fundraising event at the Catholic Newman Center on campus, from 5-8PM on 05March.  Tickets are $5 for students or $8 per adult in advance.  $10 each at the door.  If you want tickets or want more information about Rotaract email rotaract@truman.edu

We also had Patrick Nolan speak to us briefly about the potential impact of the recent legislation that passed a bill legalizing medical marijuana.  He said the impacts of this law are yet to be seen, and as is the case with so many laws, there are advantages and disadvantages of legalizing medical marijuana.  People that that are critically ill and could receive comfort from its use that cannot be comforted through any other means, will benefit from the passing of the bill, but there will likely be a lot of abuse from those that do not require it if it is not enforced in a very specific manner.  Regardless of what side of the issue one is one the law passed, and there could be some ripple effects that may be challenging for landlords, employers, and law enforcement.
