Program: YMCA Meals for Children Program;
Misti Hollenbeck-Harris

Misti is the Director of Membership, Wellness, and Fitness at the YMCA. She said that the poverty level in Adair County is 21.8% -- the highest in all counties north of Interstate 70. And 50% of the students in Kirksville R-III (K-8) are on free and reduced lunch.

Misti told us there were two separate things that were the largest catalysts for her wanting to start the meals for children program at the YMCA. Firsts, she said over the last couple years she noticed that kids were coming to the desk asking for snacks and things to eat more regularly. Then last year at the spring break camp, a little boy came in to camp and laid down behind the front desk because he was so tired. When lunchtime came around he got his lunch and it contained nothing but a few crackers and a couple cookies. It was clear to Misti that no adult was helping child pack his lunch, and he was so tired because he was not getting enough food to sustain his energy levels.

The Meals for Children Program started shortly after that incident, in June 2019. The program served breakfast and supper meals during the summer, and during the school year they do a supper meal from 3-:4:30. They recently added another site at Ray Miller Elementary – so both places now serve the supper meal. Any kid that comes in the door can get a meal. There is no requirement to be a YMCA member, or otherwise. Misti said she is hoping to expand to Novinger schools very soon.

The YMCA received a grant to acquire much of the needed equipment to start the program, like refrigerators and storage cabinets. Additionally, the government reimburses a portion of the meals, but that does not cover the cost entirely. So far, the Adair County YMCA has served over 21,800 meals since the program began in June last year. They average over 100 meals served per day. A meal consists of milk, a meat or meat alternative, vegetables, a whole grain serving variety, and a fruit.
