Program: Adair Co. YMCA; Kristin Rouner

CEO and Executive Director of the Adair County YMCA spoke to our club today about programming, the recent Dueling Pianos fundraiser, and the Strong Kids Campaign. Kristin has been the CEO and Executive Director for three years and during this time she has been assessing the needs of the community, as well as the capabilities of the YMCA. She said the YMCA building was built 35 years ago and has seen little remodeling or significant renovation since. She is planning to revisit the strategic plan and hopes that in the future there will be the community desire and means to expand or make significant renovations, but for now she is focusing on areas where the YMCA can provide more services within their current footprint. One area she and her staff identified last year was ensuring that kids have enough food.  She said her staff noticed a kid last summer that had very little in his lunch box during lunch time, and this spurred them into action to create a program where the YMCA would offer two meals a day to anyone under 18 who showed up and said they were hungry. That program will start this summer and it comes at significant expense, but it is something that the staff at the YMCA are passionate about and something they have agreed is wroth taking on. Kristin also spoke about scholarship opportunities for kids and families that do not have the income to pay for a full YMCA membership.  Finally she said that the Strong Kids Campaign hopes to raise $38,500 this year to fund all the things the YMCA funds, including the additional amount it will cost with the new food program. Last week was the dueling pianos fundraiser, and she was hoping to raise awareness of the YMCA's needs and that everyone came out and had a good time.  Since it was the first one, she had no idea what to expect as far as goals for funds raised, but she was happy to report that the event raised over $8,000 toward their $38,500 annual goal.
