Program: Andrea O'Brien; ATSU Admissions

Andrea talked about the admissions process for medical and dental school and how students can prepare to give them the best chance at success. She said that planning ahead and starting early is critical. Having hands on experience such as volunteering, shadowing, or clinical experience is also a plus.  Strong academic performance and high entrance exam scores are also an advantage, but Andrea said that her team additionally looks for people with a heart for service, and a strong reason for wanting to go into a medical profession rather than just "for the money". She said that ATSU receives about 5,000 applications per year for medical school and about 1,400 applications per year for dental school.  There are less than 200 seats in a class at the Kirksville ATSU medical school location and less than 100 for the AATSU dental school in Kirksville, so the screening process is quite grueling. Generally, only 10-12% of the applicants even get an interview, and even less get a slot in the cohort.
